In This Episode…

In yesterday’s episode I identified that I needed to extend my planning time horizon even more. However I also realised I needed to get greater clarity on what I want to achieve over a longer time frame. In today’s episode I share how I approached that and describe the new planning sheets I created to help me translate my plans into reality.

Episode Show Notes

00:16 – The Background to this episode – yesterday I realised I needed to extend my planning time horizon beyond the next 7 days.

01:02 – Today I have done two things:

  • Put some thought into what I want to be doing in 5 years time.
  • Created new planning sheets to extend my time horizon beyond the next week.

01:54 – I found it difficult to define with any great clarity what I want to be doing in 5 years time. I did come up with something but it was a bit vague.

03:12 – It was much easier to come up with something concrete for the next 3 months.

04:01 – When I was planning for the next 3 months I used the time tested planning tools of a large piece of paper, some post it notes and coloured pens.

05:22 – Having identified the main milestones for the next three months I came up with steps to achieve them using a “Before That” approach.

06:37 – I then created new templates for my planning sheets that consisted of:

  • A monthly planning sheet that also summarised the next 3 months.
  • A weekly planning sheet.
  • A daily planning sheet.

07:54 – I then spent time populating these sheets with the new information from my more strategic plan.
