In This Episode…

In today’s episode I reflect on what I believe is the first step to me developing more of a Growth Mindset.  It is actually quite simple, but I am under no illusion that it will necessarily be that easy.  Time will tell.

Hi, it’s Michael Tipper and welcome to today’s episode of the Profit Productivity Podcast.

Now yesterday I did an episode called Changing My Fixed Mindset – The Next Steps. Well today’s episode is called The First Step To Developing A Growth Mindset.

So yesterday was an overview of the approach I need to take. Now I’m starting to look at the actual concrete steps that I need to take in order to start shifting towards a growth mindset.

And that first step is quite simple.

I need to become more aware of my fixed mindset behaviour, but more importantly, more aware of the thoughts and the feelings that stimulate and trigger that behaviour.

Now my in my brain my identity and my behaviour patterns as someone with a fixed mindset are hardwired, they’re habitual and to a certain extent they’re subconscious.

Now before I can shift them, I’ve got to spot them.

And so I need to become more mindful of when I’m demonstrating fixed mindset behaviour. Only then can I start identifying the thought processes, which can then help me unearth what the beliefs are.

I’ve got to be much more mindful. Part of that I suppose is a mindfulness practice, but it’s as much as being aware of what happened and when it happens.

Now I’ve got to be patient because this is going to take a while and it’s going to be a work in progress. One of the things that I will be doing is an IF-THEN plan for this.

[IF] I find myself demonstrating a fixed mindset behaviour, [THEN] I’ll review my thoughts and identify what thought triggered it.

Now I expect I will need to do this over a long period of time. I’m not sure what long is, but I’ll probably need to capture a number of instances to start spotting the trends.

My draft approach at the moment is to spot one behaviour, deal with it and move on.

I think I’m being a little bit naive that it is going to be that simple and that systematic, but in my mind I’ve got to start somewhere.

It is hypothesis. I will conduct this experiment to see where I go.

The point being is I can’t just suddenly develop a growth mindset. I have to evolve.

I suspect what’s going to happen is once I start identifying some of those beliefs and start changing them, then the flood gates will open and the progress will accelerate.

As I start dealing with those behaviours, becoming more aware, making the changes, the knock on effect should be cumulative.

So I’ll keep you posted on how this is going.

Wish me luck.

Until tomorrow.
