In This Episode…
After getting so much value from tracking how I was using my time last week, I have continued the experiment this week. In this short episode I wax lyrical (again) about how useful it is and share the insights I gained from the data.
Episode Show Notes
After the success of tracking how I was using my time last week, I have continued do that this week.
This week it has been easier because I am now used to being conscious of keeping the records. It helps that I can record what I am doing and when I am doing it on either my paper planner, my iPad, my iPhone or my MAC. The key thing is it has become a habit.
My approach is modifying as I gather more data and encounter challenges and new scenarios.
For example I have added a research category and one for checking e mails and social media communication. The latter has been quite eye opening because until this week, I was not aware at just how often I check my phone.
Capturing the data is still useful because I am discovering new insights into my effectiveness and efficiency.
Last week I was worried when I discovered I only spent 3 hours and 16 minutes on meaty professional projects. This week that has increased to 5 hours – an improvement of about 60%
I am still spending quite a few hours dancing salsa (my passion and obsession) and it is interesting to see just how much.
One thing I have seen is a decrease in the amount of time I am spending reflecting and writing in my journal. It is down from 5 hours to 4 hours. I think it might be that I am dancing late into the evening and so when I get home I don’t feel like reviewing the day.
Something needs to be done about that. I’ll work on that this week.
So in summary, this is still a useful exercise for me – I strongly recommend you try it too.
Until tomorrow.
POST SCRIPT – Much has moved on since this episode. In episode 063 I share my results after tracking my time for 9 weeks.
